Life on Earth began some 4 billion years ago, after which many new species would later emerge, evolve, and finally go extinct. The Earth Mall showcases some of the most typical life forms to have appeared on Earth. You will also find a collection of skeletons of different species from diverse terrestrial, marine and aerial habitats, arranged in chronological order. Make your way to the end of the hall and watch the evolution of life take place before your eyes.

Time-Traveling Room
In this area you will find a collection of 360-degree dioramas which recreate what the Kyushu region would have looked like some 130 million years ago. Here you will be transported back in time to prehistoric Earth, immersed in the realistic sounds and movement of the dinosaurs as light, wind and sound effects come together to recreate a faithful rendition of the prehistoric environment.

Diversity of Life
Over the approximately 4 billion years since life first appeared on Earth, living things have continued to evolve in response to changes in the Earth's environment. It is these evolutionary changes which have resulted in the biodiversity we can see today. In this area you will discover a range of specimens of modern species from a diverse range of habitats, from some of the tiniest of insects to some of the largest examples of marine life.

Located in Southwestern Japan, the island of Kyushu is known for its temperate climate and evergreen forests. At the northernmost tip of the island is the city of Kitakyushu, nestled between miles of intricate coastline and mountainous terrain, and blessed with a natural environment home to a variety of local species. As the area connected the Japanese archipelago to the continent during the Ice Age, it even served as a route of migration for many species. In this area, you will discover the essence of Kitakyushu's natural environment through an array of dioramas and specimens.

Here you can discover the diverse festivals and culture cultivated by the people of Kitakyushu throughout history and take in the aesthetic beauty of Japan. Japan's magnificent festivals were born out of a prayer for peace, tranquility and protection from natural disasters. Enjoy the visual splendor of the gorgeous ornate yamakasa and other festival floats from Kitakyushu's three main festivals, as well as a collection of traditional handicrafts from the Kitakyushu region and the rest of Japan.

What was everyday life like for the people of Japan years ago? Here you can take a close-up look at local Kitakyushu history and culture through the lens of two completely different eras: the period of true agricultural development which lasted up until around the 3rd century; and the period of significant economic growth which took place in the 1950s. Explore replicas of typical living quarters from these different time periods, and step inside the lives of the people of the past and gain a deeper understanding of their history.

History of Kitakyushu
Kitakyushu has long served as an important gateway connecting Japan to China and the Korean Peninsula. In this area, you will find an invaluable collection of cultural objects on display which tell the story of the region's history and culture. Highlights include a collection of everday tools from the Paleolithic Era, large majestic Buddha statues, cultural artifacts which showcase the history of the samurai warriors, as well as a historical account of how the coal and iron industries helped transform Kitakyushu into the modern industrial city it is today. Experience the rich history and culture of Kitakyushu which have been passed down for generations.

Travel Back in Time to a Late 19th-Century Farmhouse

Here you can step inside a traditional Japanese thatched-roof farmhouse. In this area you will find an authentic replica of an actual farmhouse found in Kitakyushu during the second half of the 19th century. Step inside for a close-up look at the old-fashioned kitchen, irori hearth and other household tools, as well as the typical living spaces for an immersive glimpse into what life in Japan was once like during this period in history.
